I’ll be performing with my hot-shot band, and before we go on the incredible Bec Sandridge and PEPTALK will play a set.

The Rocks Homegrown Concert series is a relaxed summer
afternoon concert series held on Tallawoladah Lawn, in front of the MCA.

Some of you may not know that when I first started recording and releasing music as a solo artist, I went under the name New Buffalo. 2024 marks the 20 Year Anniversary of my debut New Buffalo album, The Last Beautiful Day.

Looking back, I can’t really believe that I wrote, recorded and produced this album myself. But I had a clear vision. I drew inspiration from the old show tunes I used to sing in high school, combined with bands like Pavement and The Blake Babies. Also, a cherished mix tape of Marilyn Monroe songs given to me by a close friend played a key role in shaping the sound scapes, lyrics and sentiments on this album.

To mark the 20 Year Anniversary of The Last Beautiful Day, I’ll be playing two very special live shows! Joining me in my band will be the smooth and soulful Bonnie Stewart on drums, harmonies and samples, as well as one of Sydney’s most talented musicians Neal Sutherland, on bass.

Will we play the entire album? YES!!! And some new songs, and a few more New Buffalo oldies.

Supports for the show will be the enticing Georgia Mulligan in Sydney, and the incredibly brilliant  Hannah Cameron in Melbourne.

The beautiful artwork is by New York artist Dan Estabrook. Photos of my younger self are by Anita Beany. Thank you to everyone who played in my live band during this time. Thanks to all of you who came along and to the shows and laughed and cried and told me the personal stories in your lives in which my music was the soundtrack.

My favourite song on the album is ‘Yes’. A personal poem, a song of longing and apologetic offerings, and the song that The New York Times reviewer was drawn to.

Huge thanks to my husband Darren. He encouraged me to make this album on my own. To take on all the roles, engineer and edit all the samples and vocals and get completely lost in the music making.

Here’s an exciting announcement!

ACMI will be screening a collection of Hollywood Home Movies from the Academy Film Archive and I’ll be providing a live score. Drawing from my New Buffalo works – which include woozy strings, sultry saxophone, tinkling piano and Hollywood-esque soundscapes – I will play along with my band as unguarded moments from the lives of some of the greatest screen goddesses flash by.
